Amma Illam warmly welcomes children and young adults with intellectual disabilities, offer them a safe and an ideal environment to learn, grow and live with dignity. Admissions are open throughout the year, based on the following guidelines:
Age Eligibility
Special School Section: Children between from 5 to 14 years are admitted into the school for structured education and training.
Home for Mentally Retarded (Residential Section): Young adults between 14 and 35 years are admitted for continued care, vocational training and rehabilitation.
IQ Classification (As per AAMR Model)
Students are admitted and placed into appropriate training groups based on their IQ level, following the American Association on Mental Retardation (AAMR) guidelines:
Mild Retardation (Education Group) –
IQ 50–55
Moderate Retardation (Trainable Group) –
IQ 40–50
Severe Retardation –
IQ 25–40
Profound Retardation –
IQ 20–25
Admission Approach
Each child undergoes an initial assessment by trained professionals, after which an individualized program is designed. The focus is on helping them achieve progress in academics, self-help skills and vocational abilities according to their capacity.
